Meet qb: an experimental tumblog complement to The All Box

Let me be frank: I’ve never been one to be frank — at least not when it comes to the written word. Short, sweet, and simple are as alien to my writing style as they are ever-present in my speech. One only has to look so far as my admiration for Kierkegaard to see the influence, for just like that melancholy Dane, I understand that my duty as a writer is not to lead my readers directly to answers but rather to awaken their awareness of the questions while the Wittgensteins of the world nod in as much assent as apathy wishing I would just get on with it.

Well, Ludwig, meet qb. qb (pronounced ‘kyoob‘) is ‘an asynchronous, unranked aggregate of web content that interests me’ and serves as an experimental tumblog complement to The All Box. Powered by Tumblr and using Ben Delaney’s Notations theme, qb is meant to be my medium of minimalism offering ‘qbits’ of information for consumption in the tersest of form.

In introducing qb, my hope is to cover more stories in the mobile tech world while repositioning The All Box to realize its original intent — to awaken awareness of the questions that the bleeding edge of technology raise.

So, while you wait for the main course, give the hors d’oeuvres a taste and savor some qb.

What is The All Box?

The All Box is a technology that transforms any wish into reality. Aladdin’s lamp, the cosmic cubes of the Marvel Universe, and the mysterious island on the television show LOST are all instances of The All Box.

The description of The All Box provided above is a simple yet crude illustration of what I mean when I utter ‘The All Box’. It is not a rigorous definition, although my intention will be to move towards one. Instead, it is an intuitive rendering of what I envision The All Box to be projected in jargon that — I hope — is somewhat intelligible. The examples are offered as means to a more concrete handle on this notion of The All Box.

Determining the quiddity of an abstract concept can be a difficult endeavor. On the one hand, I want to define The All Box clearly and succinctly without a hint of ambiguity. On the other hand, I want the definition to be general enough that it encompasses everything that it should. For now, let me restate the question and my intuitive answer to it and offer some brief commentary.

What is The All Box?
The All Box is a technology that transforms any wish into reality.

  1. The All Box is an abstract concept like love or number.
  2. The All Box can have any multitude of instances, none of which need to be boxes, box-shaped, or any shaped.
  3. The All Box is a technology. This is where ambiguity begins to pop up. What is a technology? Intuitively, it is a tool or process that performs an action with some utility.
  4. The All Box transforms any wish into reality. Here is where things become even less clear. What does that mean exactly? I think of a wish as being any possible thing that can be actualized. Note that some things are not wishes, presumably those things that The All Box cannot transform into reality. I take the term reality at face value. It is what it is.
  5. The All Box is something one interacts with. The interface may differ with every instance. Essentially, The All Box takes any valid input and outputs the desired result.

I will be revisiting the notion of The All Box throughout. In the mean time, here is a question with a more definitive answer:

What is is a tech blog.
